action

The poor bamboo collector Okina ("old man") finds a glowing bamboo one day. In it he finds a tiny woman who turns into a baby when he takes her home. Together with his wife Ōna ("old woman") he raises the rapidly growing child they call Takenoko ("bamboo sprout; bamboo child"). Takenoko enjoys her simple life and makes friends with the other children, especially with Sutemaru. But her foster father soon finds gold and valuables in other bamboo trees, and then moves with Takenoko and his wife to an estate in the city. Her daughter, who is now given the name Kaguya, is said to grow up like a noblewoman, and is brought up and dressed accordingly. After a while, she is also visited by young nobles who ask for her hand. Kaguya takes little pleasure in all of this and rejects all admirers. Eventually she becomes aware that she comes from the moon and with her all the wealth. Kaguya has to go back there, a train of moon beings, led by Buddha, picks them up from the earth and takes them with them.

reception

By mid-December 2013, the film grossed around $ 13 million in Japan. In the Japan Times , Mark Schilling describes the visual style of the film as initially unfinished compared to other Ghibli films, but over the course of the film the style, reminiscent of old Japanese ink drawings, develops further and goes well with the content. Isao Takahata recounts the story that is very well known in Japan, but his own intention to tell remains vague. The end was spooky and in the film as a whole there was "great wisdom, but also great sadness."
