The Red Turtle is a French - Japanese - Belgian animated film directed by Michael Dudok de Wit from 2016 .
action
A shipwrecked man is washed ashore on a tropical island, which is only inhabited by turtles , crabs and birds . To get away from the island, the man builds a raft , which is destroyed by a red turtle when he tries several times to leave the island.
When the turtle comes ashore one day, he turns it on its back in anger and leaves it lying in the sand. He builds a new raft to leave the island, but soon feels sorry for the animal. When he tries to feed her a fish, he notices that the turtle has died. To the amazement of the man, the lifeless turtle transforms into a woman at night. After a while, the two start a relationship.
Several years later, the husband and wife still live on the island and have since had a son. After the boy accidentally falls into a small cave, he develops a special relationship with the turtles on the island. When a tsunami hit the island some time later , the small forest on the island is almost completely destroyed. The boy decides to leave the island and says goodbye to his parents. He eventually swims away with three turtles.
The man and woman continue to live on the island until one day the man dies peacefully. The woman then turns back into the red turtle and pushes herself back into the ocean.

The film is a co-production by Why Not Productions , CN4 Productions , Arte France Cinéma , Wild Bunch (France), Studio Ghibli (Japan) and Belvision (Belgium). It premiered on May 18, 2016 at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival , where it was screened in the Un-Certain Regard section and was nominated for a Golden Camera .
In Germany it was released in cinemas on March 16, 2017.
The film is structured without language and is based on the art of Ukiyo-e and Ligne claire .
