Reports
background
After finishing third at the Italian Grand Prix , Michael Andretti left the McLaren Formula 1 team to return to the US Champ Car series. His place was taken by Mika Häkkinen .
In place of Marco Apicella , Emanuele Naspetti took over the cockpit of the second Jordan alongside regular driver Rubens Barrichello .
training
Damon Hill qualified for pole position ahead of his team-mate Alain Prost, who was the leader in the world championship standings . It was followed by the two McLaren MP4 / 8s owned by Mika Häkkinen and Ayrton Senna . Jean Alesi finished fifth on the grid, ahead of his two Benetton team- mates Michael Schumacher and Riccardo Patrese .
run
Since Hills Motor did not start at the beginning of the formation lap, he had to start the race from the back of the field.
Alesi was the first to finish the first lap ahead of Senna, Häkkinen, Prost and Schumacher. Hill fought his way up to eighth place by the tenth lap. During the next nine laps he made up another seven positions. Among other things, this was helped by the fact that Senna retired on the 20th lap due to an engine failure and Alesi, Häkkinen and Schumacher made a pit stop almost simultaneously. This put Prost in the lead and Hill in second place. When the two teammates completed their tire changes on lap 29 and 30 respectively, Schumacher took the lead. Mika Häkkinen and Gerhard Berger retired due to independent accidents.
Towards the end of the race, Prost caught up with the leading Schumacher. He didn't take any chances, however, as he knew that second place was enough for him to secure his fourth world title. Hill was third ahead of Alesi. Karl Wendlinger and Martin Brundle took fifth and sixth place.
