Marco Apicella (born October 7, 1965 in Bologna ) is a former Italian racing driver .

Career

His only Grand Prix participation was in 1993 at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza for the Irish Jordan Team . Involved in a starting collision in the first chicane, he only got 200 meters. However, Apicella remained active as a racing driver. In 1994 he became Formula Nippon Champion. He contested the Formula 3000 championship in Italy and the Super GT championship in Japan . On his third appearance at the Sarthe in 2006 , he drove a Lamborghini Murciélago at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , a historic event in that it was the brand's first participation in the legendary endurance race.

In 2007 Apicella should start again in Le Mans. At the wheel of a Lamborghini again, however, he had a serious accident in the first qualification. The car was so badly damaged that it was out of the question, and Apicella was banned from starting after his severe concussion. The JLOC Isao Noritake team received special permission from the ACO to be able to compete with a replacement car and a 2-driver team. The team rented a Lamborghini from the FIA GT Championship and modified it at short notice so that it complied with the ACO regulations. However, the vehicle with Kōji Yamanishi at the wheel was already in the first lap with damage to the power transmission.
