Le Mans 24 Hours 2006
The 74th 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 74 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , and 24 Heures du Mans, Le Mans , was from 17 to 18 June 2006 the Circuit des 24 Heures instead of.
The race
After the Audi R8 was no longer used, Audi came to Le Mans with a completely new vehicle and engine concept. The Audi R10 TDI presented in Paris on December 13, 2005 was powered by a newly developed, 5.5-liter, twelve-cylinder TDI engine with twin- turbo charging . With over 475 kW and 1200 Newton meters, the Le Mans prototype exceeded the performance data of its successful predecessor, the R8. The V12 engine housing was made entirely of aluminum .
During the first race, the Sebring 12-hour race , there were unexpected problems. Problems with the radiators occurred in both vehicles, and one car was even lost during the race due to an engine failure, which is very rare at Audi. R10s that were driven by the Capello / Kristensen / McNish and Biela / Werner / Pirro teams were registered in Le Mans . As in the previous year, the only serious opponents were the Pescarolo C60 by Henri Pescarolo and the Dome S101 by Jan Lammers . At Pescarolo, as in previous years, with Emmanuel Collard , Érik Comas , Nicolas Minassian , Éric Hélary and the now two-time rally world champion Sébastien Loeb, only French sat in the cockpits. In addition to the now 50-year-old Stefan Johansson, Lammers signed the former Malaysian Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong . In the race, the two Audis were clearly superior to the competition. The decision about victory was made by a defective turbocharger on the car with the number 8. This Audi was unable to make up the gap of over ten laps on the second works car. This gave Pescarolo a surprising second place finish.
The LMP2 class was better staffed this year than at previous events. The MG-Lola EX264 owned by Mike Newton , Thomas Erdos and Andy Wallace remained safe in the race. The lead on second class Lola B05 / 42 by William Binnie , Yōjirō Terada and Allen Timpany was 15 laps at the end.
In the GT classes, the teams fought for positions for almost 24 hours. In the GT1 class, the Corvette team, Oliver Gavin / Olivier Beretta / Jan Magnussen , won, up to fourth place overall. For the trio it was the third class win in a row. The GT2 class provided the big surprise. There the newly developed Panoz Esperante GT-LM by Lawrence Tomlinson , Tom Kimber-Smith and Richard Dean narrowly prevailed against the favored Porsches.
