After winning the British Formula 3 Championship in 1979, Johansson was registered for the first time for a Formula 1 race at the 1980 Argentina Grand Prix on Shadow . Johansson achieved a total of 88 world championship points, his best results being four second places in 1985 at the Grand Prix of Canada and the USA in a Ferrari and in 1987 in the GP of Belgium and Germany in a McLaren- TAG - Porsche . After a series of disappointments in the years 1989 to 1991 and numerous races for which Johansson could not qualify due to a lack of competitive material, he switched to the IndyCar World Series in 1992 with Tony Bettenhausen's team . He finished third at his first start in Detroit and won the Rookie of the Year Award at the end of the season . Johansson stayed in this racing series until the end of 1996, but did not win a race here either. In 1996 Johansson was involved in the collision with Jeff Krosnoff in Toronto , which cost both Krosnoff and a marshal their lives.

The Swede initially ended his active racing career, around 2007 on the establishment of a new racing series in the Middle East, the Speedcar Series to participate, where he in the 2007/2008 season on numerous former Formula 1 drivers like Jean Alesi , Heinz Harald Frentzen , Johnny Herbert , Gianni Morbidelli and Jacques Villeneuve .

Sports car

As early as 1983 , the Swede made his debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race for Reinhold Joest's team . Together with Bob Wollek and Klaus Ludwig , he reached fifth place in the overall ranking. After winning the sports car races in Mugello in 1983 and Spa-Francorchamps in 1988, Johansson celebrated his greatest successes in endurance races in 1997. With Joest Racing he won Le Mans and the 12-hour race at Sebring  - held a few weeks before the classic at the Sarthe - he drove a Ferrari 333SP to overall victory. Teammates there were Fermín Vélez , Andy Evans and Yannick Dalmas .

With the establishment of his own racing team, the Swede also entered the American Le Mans Series in the early 2000s . Up until 2008 he had competed a total of 14 times in Le Mans. With the Audi R8 , he achieved another top position in this race in 2003 with third place overall.
