history

In 1968, the GS-Tuning company emerged from the Gerhard Schneider car dealership in Freiburg, which was then the main BMW dealer in southern Baden . Due to the owner's enthusiasm for racing, a sports department was founded in 1970 in the industrial area of the Freiburg district of Gundelfingen , which soon achieved success in hillclimbing and circuit racing. A wide range of vehicle conversions (especially the 2002 BMW model ) and motorsport accessories were presented.

The GS Tuning Team drove 4 BMW vehicles in the 1979 season, and this year the first BMW turbo engine was tested and driven in the vehicle by Markus Höttinger.

When the BMW development engineer and racing driver Dieter Basche became a co-partner of the dealership in 1972 , new opportunities for expansion opened up for the company, including the addition of the automotive technician Randlinger, who as a Formula 2 engine specialist the Freiburg-based company from 1973 onwards the use of four-valve engines (from BMW and Schnitzer) with almost 280 hp. From 1974, the company was able to win Europa-Möbel as main sponsor and Jörg Obermoser as driver for the German racing championship. Despite great success in this racing series, the title was mostly narrowly missed until 1980, even when Warsteiner became the new main sponsor in 1975 . In the following years, some new talents such as Hans-Georg Bürger or Markus Höttinger were hired , who ensured international success. At the beginning of the 1980s, GS-Tuning was able to get involved in the Procar series through sponsorship from BASF with the BMW M1 , which was held as a preliminary program for the Formula 1 races at the time . In 1980, in the DRM, Hans Heyer (who was surprisingly replaced by Klaus Ludwig at Zakspeed) and Domingos Piedade arranged a collaboration with the Lancia racing department, which already finished the Group 5 version of the Lancia Beta Montecarlo for the brand world championship had developed - whereby the Italians made it a condition that a DRM team could be located a maximum of 4 hours away from Turin. Since GS tuning was actually only possible as a tried and tested DRM size because of the Freiburg location, an agreement was quickly reached with Gerhard Schneider, who was then very successful with Hans Heyer and the sponsor Fruit of the Loom and finally with this combination in 1980 the title could be won.

However, since the course of business increasingly stagnated, the individual divisions of Gerhard Schneider KG were gradually dissolved until operations were completely closed in 1988 and the company was liquidated . Most of the racing department was taken over by Walter Brun , while smaller items were also sold to private individuals. Today, parts with the GS lettering are sought-after collector's items.
