Career

Racing driver

Dieter Basche started his racing career in touring car racing in the late 1960s. At the same time he was head of the BMW sports department and involved in the development of the Formula 2 racing cars. He brought the experience gained as a racing driver directly to the development of BMW racing vehicles.

He was accepted into the Formula 2 works team through several successful appearances from 1966 in the German Automobile Circuit Championship with a BMW 1800 TI and BMW 2000 TI. In 1970 he drove Hubert Hahne's BMW F2 70/3 to 7th place at the Baden-Württemberg Grand Prix and also competed in the Munich-Neubiberg airfield race.

Basche celebrated his greatest successes as a racing driver in the German Racing Championship , where he achieved 3rd place in the overall standings in 1972 and 1973 on a BMW 2002 TI .

Audi Sport

In 1979 Basche retired as a racing driver and initially went to Audi as an engineer, where he later became head of technology. There he worked as a chassis engineer in the development of the Audi S1 , with which Walter Röhrl won the 1985 San Remo Rally . Later, as Head of Audi Technology and Motorsport, he was responsible for the development of the Audi V8 quattro DTM , with which Hans-Joachim Stuck became DTM champions in 1990 and Frank Biela a year later .

His successor as Head of Audi Motorsport was taken over by Wolfgang Ullrich in 1993 .
