The race
The 1000 km race in 1970 was the last race to be held as part of the 1970 World Sports Car Championship. The decision in the overall ranking had already been made before this event; Porsche secured the title of brand world champion. Especially the Porsche 917s of John Wyer's team were hard to beat. Leo Kinnunen and Pedro Rodríguez won four races of the season , Joseph Siffert and Brian Redman two. At the Nürburgring , in the 1000 km race there , a Porsche 908 won , driven by Vic Elford and Kurt Ahrens . Only once was Porsche not victorious. When 12-hour race at Sebring who won work - Ferrari 512 of Ignazio Giunti , Nino Vaccarella and Mario Andretti .
At the Österreichring, in addition to John Wyer’s team, the Austrian Porsche Holding also competed with a Porsche 917; The vehicle was driven by Helmut Marko and Kurt Ahrens. The works team reported two Porsche 908s . Ferrari only brought one works car to the track, which was driven by Jacky Ickx and Ignazio Giunti. Surprisingly strong were plant - Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 , which by Autodelta were used. Andrea de Adamich and Henri Pescarolo finished second in the overall standings. After Pedro Rodríguez retired after only four laps due to valve damage, the race was relieved of tension early on. When Jacky Ickx, who was now in the lead, rolled out after 53 laps with damage to the electrical system, the second Wyer-Porsche no longer had a serious opponent. Joseph Siffert and Brian Redman won by a clear margin over the aforementioned Alfa Romeo and the Porsche 908 of Gérard Larrousse and Rudi Lins .
