Reinhold Joest (born April 24, 1937 ) is a former German automobile racing driver and owner of Joest Racing .

Career

Joest is a trained businessman. He began his racing career in 1962 with a Porsche Carrera and an Alfa Romeo . Until 1968 he mainly competed in hill climbs and was German champion twice. From 1966 he gradually switched to circuits and celebrated his first success in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , when he and Hermann Dorner won the prototype class up to 1600 cm³ in a Porsche 356B 1600 and finished 26th in the overall ranking. In 1971 Joest was accepted into the Porsche works team, in which he achieved almost everything except a Le Mans victory. In 1969 he finished sixth in the Ford GT40 at Le Mans, and in 1972 third in the Porsche 908/2 long tail . In 1978, Joest founded his own racing team, Joest Racing , in which he is team boss, but also raced himself for the first three years. In 1978 he finished third in a Porsche 936 and in 1980 second in a self-built Porsche 908/80 at Le Mans. Joest won the Interserie , several races of the World Sports Car Championship and in 1980 the Daytona 24-hour race . 1981 Joest won his last race as an active racing driver together with Jochen Mass in Kyalami . Then he ended his career.

In 1978 he won the overall classification in the class of the European Sports Car Championship . For this he received the silver bay leaf .

Since 1984, Joest and his team have won the Le Mans 24 Hours 16 times.
