Brands Hatch 1000km race 1970
The 1970 Brands Hatch 1000 km race , also known as the BOAC 1000 Kilometers World Championship Sports Car Race, Brands Hatch , took place on April 12 at Brands Hatch and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
The endurance race on the Brands Hatch circuit had been part of the World Sports Car Championship since 1967 . From 1967 to 1969 the event was advertised as a 6-hour race. In 1970 the British Racing & Sports Car Club changed the distance to 1000 kilometers.
The 1970 race at Brands Hatch was the third race. The season began with the 24 Hours of Daytona , which with the overall victory by Pedro Rodriguez , Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman in by John Wyer reported Porsche 917 ended. The Sebring 12-hour race saw Scuderia Ferrari's first victory in a sports car world championship race since the success of Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini in the Ferrari 330P4 at the Monza 1000 km race in 1967 . Ignazio Giunti , Nino Vaccarella and Mario Andretti won in the Ferrari 512S just ahead of a Porsche 908/02 driven by Peter Revson and American actor Steve McQueen .
The race
Wyer race director David Yorke registered two Porsche 917K for Pedro Rodríguez / Leo Kinnunen and Jo Siffert / Brian Redman. The two 917K from Porsche Salzburg were driven by Vic Elford / Denis Hulme and Richard Attwood / Hans Herrmann . Surprisingly the start of Denny Hulme, who had Formula 1 World Champion in 1967 , the team of Louise Piëch the thwarted Kurt Ahrens replaced. David Piper reported a fifth 917K for himself and David Hobbs . After winning the world title in 1969 , the reduced Porsche - factory team 's commitment crucial. For the first time in the season, two vehicles were registered for the Brands Hatch race, but both were owned by Hans-Dieter Dechent . The number 56 908/02 was driven by Gerhard Koch and Gérard Larrousse . One driver of the car with the number 55 was the British Tony Dean . Dean had an accident with the car during training (racing partner was Hans-Dieter Dechent) and could not take part in the race.
At Scuderia Ferrari, too, there were changes in the drivers of the two 512S Spyder that were reported. Chris Amon, who had left Scuderia at the end of the 1969 season and started the formula for March Engineering , returned to the Scuderia sports car team at Brands Hatch. His partner in the race was Arturo Merzario . With Jackie Oliver , who drove for Ferrari for the first time, Jacky Ickx received his standard partner from his time with John Wyer in 1969 at Brands Hatch. Scuderia Filipinetti reported a third 512S for Herbert Müller and Mike Parkes , and a fourth for Georg Loos from Germany (team-mate Jonathan Williams ). In addition to the Matra-Simca MS650 for Jack Brabham / Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Henri Pescarolo / Johnny Servoz-Gavin , the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 with a 3-liter V8 engine was finally used. Autodelta reported a Tipo 33 for Piers Courage and Andrea de Adamich .
The fastest lap time in practice was achieved by Chris Amon in a Ferrari 512S Spyder with 1: 28.600 minutes, which corresponded to an average of 173.286 km / h. For comparison: At the British Grand Prix , which was driven at Brands Hatch in July 1970, the pole position time was 1: 24.800 minutes, driven by Jochen Rindt in a Lotus 72C .
The race took place under bad weather conditions. Despite the pouring rain, however, 20,000 spectators hit the track on race day. Georg Loos decided not to start because he had no rain tires. Vic Elford had the best start in the rain in the Porsche 917, which led Jacky Ickx (Ferrari), Jack Brabham (Matra) and Jo Siffert (Porsche) as well as the rest of the field into the first lap. Pedro Rodríguez had overtaken several yellow flag cars and for a few laps ignored the race management's warning flag to allow himself to be overtaken again. In order to avoid a disqualification in the room, the Wyer team management brought the Mexican into the pits and let the Porsche stop until all cars had passed the 917 again. Jo Siffert's Porsche suffered a puncture early on and Piers Courage had an accident in the rain in the Alfa Romeo on the home straight.
Jacky Ickx soon lost the lead to Vic Elford. Ickx, and later his teammate Jackie Oliver, had major problems with the windshield wipers . Both drivers had to go to the pits several times without planning in order to have the wiper blades changed. The rain decreased with the duration of the race and the lap times got better. As the race progressed, Rodríguez and Kinnunen clearly separated themselves from the rest of the field. After an accident by Brian Redman, which led to the failure of the second Wyer-917, the duo was safe. At the finish they had a lead of five laps on the Porsche-Salzburg-917 from Elford and Hulme. Chris Amon lost third place due to problems with the fuel supply. Twice in the last phase of the race he came to the pits to refuel and in the end fell back to fifth place. As a result, Attwood and Herrmann finished third overall in the second Porsche-Salzburg-917.
