John Burton (born November 30, 1941 in Kidderminster ) is a former British racing driver .

Racing career

John Burton's career was divided into two parts. The first phase spanned the years from 1966 to 1975, after which, after a break of 22 years, a comeback followed in 1997, which lasted until the 24-hour race at Daytona in 2003 . Burton drove national sports car races in the late 1960s . Various Ginettas were followed in 1969 by a Chevron B8 as a new emergency vehicle, with this model he won a sprint race on the Silverstone Circuit , his first success in a car race. In 1970 he got into the European sports car championship and finished this racing series (overall winner Joakim Bonnier in a Lola T210 ) as overall seventh. In 1972 (in the Chevron B21 behind Arturo Merzario in the Abarth-Osella SE021) and 1973 (in the Chevron B23 behind Chris Craft in the Lola T292 ) he finished second overall.

In 1973 he achieved a surprising result in an international sports car race. Together with his compatriot John Bridges , he finished third overall in a 2-liter Chevron B23 in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , a championship race of the sports car world championship . He was entered in the Le Mans 24-hour race several times , but never took part in the race.

In 1997 he returned to the racetracks for a few years and mainly competed in the British GT Championship . After finishing 15th in Daytona, he ended his career for good.
