The 19th 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also the 19th international ADAC 1000 km race on the Nürburgring, Nürburgring Nordschleife , took place on May 27, 1973. The race was the seventh round of the sports car world championship of that year and the eleventh round of the German racing championship in 1973

The race

The race was held over 44 laps of the 22.835 km long Nordschleife. The fastest in training was François Cevert in the Matra-Simca MS 670B with a time of 7: 12.8 minutes ahead of Jacky Ickx , Ferrari 312P (7: 15.5 minutes), and Rolf Stommelen in the Alfa Romeo 33 TT 12 .

After the start of the race, Cevert kept the lead. Henri Pescarolo overtook Rolf Stommelen on the second Matra , drove into the south bend in third place, but retired on the first lap with a connecting rod damage. The Cevert / Beltoise team also had to give up the race on lap 12 with engine failure. On the same lap, the Stommelen / de Adamich Alfa Romeo retired with a defective valve after the same damage had stopped Clay Regazzoni in the second factory Alfa on lap two.

Despite these failures, the race was exciting at times, especially when Arturo Merzario in the second Ferrari attacked and overtook the leading Jacky Ickx, contrary to the strategy of the Ferrari race director. After a refueling stop on lap 39, Merzario had to give the car to Carlos Pace , who finished the race in second. Merzario then decided not to take part in the award ceremony.

Third overall, the John Burton / John Bridges team won the sports car class in a Chevron B23 Ford-Cosworth. Paul Keller / Jürgen Neuhaus / Clemens Schickentanz came in eleventh place as winners of the GT class with a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. John Fitzpatrick / Gerry Birrell in a Ford Capri RS were the winners of the touring car class up to 3 liters displacement and sixth in the overall classification . Toine Hezemans / Dieter Quester in a BMW 3.0 CSL won the touring car class over 3 liters as ninth .

23 of 49 vehicles that started crossed the finish line; 59 cars were registered.
