German racing championship

The German Racing Championship or DRM for short was the most important German automobile racing series from 1972 to 1985 . Its predecessor was the German Circuit Championship (DARM), which existed from 1960 to 1971 , followed by the DTM ( German Touring Car Championship until 1996 and the German Touring Car Masters from 2000 ).

In the first years of the DRM, modified touring cars were used according to FIA - Group 2 rules.

There were separate races in two divisions:

In the first five years, Ford drivers were able to achieve the DRM title, with Hans-Joachim Stuck starting in his only year with the Cologne brand. Formula 1 drivers such as Rolf Stommelen and Jochen Mass also took part occasionally. Other notable drivers were Waltraud Odenthal in her ex-works Ford Capri RS or Walter Röhrl in an Opel Kadett GT / E.

From 1977 touring cars were registered according to the rules of the FIA Group 5 , which were much more heavily modified, had sweeping fender flares and spoilers and were mostly equipped with turbo engines that had to have a displacement 1.4 times smaller.

  • large division 1 to 4000 cm³, typically with Porsche 935 , Ford Capri Turbo
  • small division 2 to 2000 cm³, typically with Ford Escort, BMW 320

These spectacular, but also expensive racing cars were used until 1982, but mostly only in single-digit numbers because of the costs, whereby amateurs with cheaper suction motor types filled the fields and carried out their own evaluation.

From 1982 the FIA introduced a new set of rules. The DRM was now tendered for FIA Group C sports cars , which were, however, hardly available so that conversions had to be improvised. In the last season of 1985, the racing series was announced under a new name as the German Sports Car Championship .

Since 2005, the Automobile Club of Germany has honored the German racing championship as part of the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix with the “Revival German racing championship”. The AvD succeeded in bringing numerous original vehicles to the start.
