The AvD was founded in Berlin in 1899 as the German Automobile Club (DAC). It forms the umbrella organization of various local and corporate clubs throughout Germany, for example the Bavarian, the Berlin (founded in 1900), the Silesian (founded 1901), the Rhenish and Schleswig-Holstein automobile clubs . In 1900 the AvD organized the first international automobile exhibition in Frankfurt am Main, in 1905 it was renamed the Kaiserlicher Automobil-Club (KAC) , since Kaiser Wilhelm II took over the patronage of the club at Christmas.

In 1904, the AvD organized the first international car race in Germany, the race for the Coupe Gordon Bennett near Bad Homburg in front of the height (see also motorsport year 1904 ).

After the end of the monarchy in Germany, the club gave itself its current name Automobilclub von Deutschland (AvD) in 1918. In addition to motorsport, for which the AvD has always been committed, traffic safety is another important topic: in 1924, the AvD was therefore one of the founders of the German Traffic Guard. In 1926 the club hosted the first German Grand Prix at AVUS , which it helped to finance .

In 1935, the AvD gave up its statutory purpose and changed its name to the German International Club in order to avoid being brought into line in the National Socialist Motor Corps (NSKK).

On November 6, 1948, the AvD was re-established in Königstein im Taunus. The following year, the FIA assembly unanimously decided to resume the AvD. AvD members Huschke von Hanstein , Manfred von Brauchitsch , Paul von Metternich and Juan Manuel Fangio again achieved success in motorsport. In 1953 the club started its breakdown service with six DKW panel vans . In 1967, AvD sports president Huschke von Hanstein brought Formula Vee to Germany. In the same year (1967) the AvD promoted the introduction of the seat belt with public accident demonstrations . The AvD Auto EKG started in 1968 - the first technical test that could be carried out on the go.

In addition to its commitment to road safety and breakdown assistance, the AvD also increasingly looked after older vehicles in the following years. Together with the Club of Historic Racing and Sports Vehicles Nürburgring e. V. (CHRSN) and the Hesse Motorsport Club e. V. Wiesbaden, the AvD organized the first international historical race on the Nürburgring in 1972 - this event later became the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix . Overall, the AvD has developed into a service company and has significantly expanded its services.

In 2016, the association had around 200,000 members and around 1.4 million insured persons in total.

The AvD is also represented in the Presidium of the DMSB by its Vice President Gebhard Sanne. The AvD organizes safety checks and offers further assistance in the travel and accident area.

Motorsport

The AvD is an active organizer of various motorsport events such as the German Grand Prix , the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix , the Saxony Rally and the AvD Histo Tour.

As a sponsor, the AvD supports various events in modern and classic automobile sport as well as selected young talents. In addition, the AvD corporate clubs organize numerous events of their own and promote their members' involvement in motorsport.

Another focus of AvD activities is the preservation of historic vehicles. In addition to the AvD OldtimerCard and the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, the AvD has been campaigning for the interests of old and youngtimer owners and the maintenance of automotive cultural assets for years. The 2014 AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix was awarded the FIA Founding Members' Club Heritage Cup. Furthermore, AvD Vice President Graf zu Ortenburg is a founding member of the IAK Initiative Automobiles Kulturgut eV, which advocates the recognition of historical motorized means of transport as a cultural asset. Numerous classic car clubs, some of which specialize in certain brands or models, are also part of the AvD. It was thanks, among other things, to the work of the AvD that oldtimers with H and red license plates are allowed to enter environmental zones with a special permit.

Traffic safety

As a traffic club, the AvD is also actively involved in organizations and projects for traffic safety. The AvD is represented in the German Road Safety Council and a member of the German Road Traffic Court . With Allianz SE , information films were sent nationwide to all elementary schools in which Willi Weitzel demonstrates why it is so important that children are properly secured with restraint systems ("seat belts") and bicycle helmets. Under the patronage of the Federal Minister of Transport, he works alongside Goodyear in the Hero of the Road award . In addition, the AvD, together with the Automobil-Club Westfalen e. V. awarded the Westphalian Road Safety Prize and together with it supports the Guardian Angel project of the Gütersloh district .
