The Berliner Automobil-Club eV (BAC), based in Berlin, is a regional automobile club in Berlin and Brandenburg and a local club of the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD).

history

In 1900 the Berliner Automobil-Verein u. a. founded as a reaction to the car-hostility of the politicians, who at that time still mostly drove carriages. On January 22nd, 1906, at the general assembly of the Berlin Automobile Association, it was decided to change the association's name to the Berliner Automobil-Club. The club represented the interests of the Berlin motorists and set itself the goal of promoting community touring, organizing car races and running training courses for drivers. From the beginning, the BAC belonged to the German Automobile Club (DAC) as a cartel club , which became the Imperial Automobile Club (KAC) on December 24, 1905 after Kaiser Wilhelm II took over the Protectorate .

From the beginning, the club, chaired by the manufacturer Anton Bolzani, was a social center of Berlin. The members of the first hour included the imperial family, the Adlon hotelier family and the media entrepreneur Rudolf Ullstein . In the clubhouse on Königgrätzer Strasse near Potsdamer Platz , representatives of the automotive industry, racing and sports drivers, artists, politicians and members of upper class Berlin society met. Not only were discussions held and poker played here, but technical lectures were also given and people were involved in transport policy.

The association initiated the establishment of AVUS GmbH in 1909 and organized the races itself from 1921 onwards. It took part in the automobile exhibitions, helped develop the road traffic regulations and was committed to the installation of the first traffic lights on Potsdamer Platz, which are today Berlin sights count.

After the end of the First World War and the German Empire, August Horch took over the presidency of the club. After 1933, the BAC managed to remain independent for four years and to prevent affiliation with the National Socialist Motor Corps . When the takeover threatened in 1937, the members dissolved the club.

The club has been active in Berlin again since 1950. The social highlight is the annual Berlin Automobile Ball. The racing driver and fur trader Wolfgang Levy was president of the association for 20 years until his death and represented Berlin's interests in the Presidium of the AvD.

The association registered at the Berlin-Mitte District Court had 400 members on December 31, 2011. The BAC is headed by a President, the Vice-President, the Treasurer and the Secretary. The club is run on a voluntary basis.

Services

As an AvD local club, the BAC offers club members additional optional services such as breakdown and towing assistance via the AvD emergency call center. B. Insurance service, travel service, classic car card, legal advice and club magazine.

Events

The social highlight of the BAC events is the Berlin Automobile Ball. There are also excursions, sightseeing, first aid courses and driver safety training. The members meet regularly in the Classic Remise Berlin .
