The 1972 German Racing Championship was the first season of the German Racing Championship (DRM) and replaced the German Automobile Circuit Championship (DARM).

There were 10 races in the 1st and 2nd division. The first race took place on April 30th at the Nürburgring and the last race of the season was the Sauerland hill climb on October 8th.

Three races from other international championships were also counted in the DRM. The participating drivers also received points in the DRM rating. The first additional race took place as part of the sports car world championship . The second race was hosted by the European Touring Car Championship and the third race was hosted by the 2-liter European Sports Car Championship .

Hans-Joachim Stuck secured the title in a Ford Capri RS 2600 with 201 points and 50 points ahead of second-placed Klaus Fritzinger .
