The 32nd 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also Int. ADAC 1000 km race, Nürburgring , took place on August 30, 1987 at the Nürburgring and was the eighth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

With another success in the standings - after the success of the 360-km race at Jarama , the 1000 km race at Jerez and the 1,000-km race at Monza , Silverstone and Brands Hatch - the factory team was Jaguar under with Tom Walkinshaw's leadership at the Nürburgring to secure the overall ranking in the 1987 Sports Car World Championship .

After the 24-hour race at Le Mans, Porsche withdrew from the sports car world championship and passed the 3-liter, 6-cylinder turbo engines, which had previously only been reserved for works cars, on to the customer teams. However, this process met with criticism from some customer team bosses. On the one hand, it was criticized that Porsche did not also pass on the factory chassis and, on the other hand, the poorer response of the 3-liter engine compared to the conventional 2.8-liter unit was criticized. When Richard Lloyd were dispensed with the 3-liter engine, yet scored Mauro Baldi in the Porsche 962 GTi with 1.24.430 minutes, the fastest time in training.

Klaus Ludwig had the best start in the Joest -962C, who took the lead. While Eddie Cheever had an early start in the Jaguar XJR-8 and was penalized with a minute, Derek Bell was unable to start the second Joest Porsche on time and was the last to start the race.

After 28 laps the Jaguar with starting number 5, in which Jan Lammers was at the wheel, broke down with a crack in the engine block. After 118 laps, Klaus Ludwig, who had been in the lead for a long time, had to give up the race due to a broken shift fork, and the way was clear for Raul Boesel and Eddie Cheever to win in their second Jaguar, who thus won the world championship title for the British brand.

In the C2 class, the favorites dropped out after a dramatic race due to a lack of petrol. Ray Mallock in the Ecosse C286 no longer made it to the pits for the last pit stop, but stopped just before the entrance with no fuel. Gordon Spice , in the Spice SE87C, came to the pits, but there the car could not be started and had to be pushed, which resulted in the disqualification. The class win went to Costas Los and Dudley Wood , who drove a Tiga GC287.

Klaus Ludwig drove the fastest race lap in the third lap, lapping the new Nürburgring in 1.29.510 minutes.
