Uwe Schäfer (born July 10, 1963 in Rodheim , † April 11, 2004 in Usingen ) was a German automobile racing driver .

Career

In the early 1980s, Schäfer initially drove kart races, a. a. at KV Oppenrod. In 1982 he switched to Formula Ford and became German champion in the national series for holders of a national German license, which was held from 1980 to 1982 parallel to the ONS championship for holders of an international license. In 1984 he became the overall winner in this series. With 5th place (1982) and 2nd place (1984) at the renowned International Formula Ford Festival in Brands Hatch, Uwe Schäfer is still the most successful German participant at this event. In 1985 Schäfer drove some races in the German Formula 3 Championship, initially at Walter Lechner Racing School . However, he switched to Bayern-Motorsport after the second run. Despite good training results, u. a. two pole positions at the Norisring and in Hockenheim at race 9, at the end of the year Schäfer only achieved 20th place with 8 points in the overall ranking. Many failures, a disallowed victory due to the car's underweight in Race 6 in Zeltweg and some non-participation in races prevented a better result. In 1986, when Walter Brun had noticed him, Schäfer drove his first race in a Porsche 962 C for the Brun Motorsport team . At the International 9th ​​ADAC Airport Race in Siegerland , the 5th run of the Interseries , he finished 3rd in the overall ranking. However, there were no other sports car outings for him in 1986. He only contested one race for the ETCC this year , together with Dieter Quester in a Schnitzer BMW 635 CSi. From 1987 to 1989 Schäfer competed in a total of 20 races, all on a Porsche 962 C and for Walter Brun's team, in the WSPC and in the sports car Supercup . His best results were two third places in the 1988 Supercup in Hockenheim and at the Nürburgring Eifel race. Uwe Schäfer contested his last race on September 17, 1989 in Spa-Francorchamps , a run to the WSPC (disqualification due to unauthorized battery replacement).
