The 20th 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also ADAC 1000 km race, brand world championship, Nürburgring Nordschleife , took place on May 19, 1974. The race was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year and the eleventh round of the German racing championship in 1974 .

Before the race

This year's 1000 km race on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring was the third racing event of the 1974 World Sports Car Championship . The opening race of the season, the 1000 km race in Monza , ended with the overall victory of Arturo Merzario and Mario Andretti in the Autodelta - Alfa Romeo 33TT12 . Two weeks before the race in the Eifel won Jean-Pierre Jarier and Jacky Ickx in the plant - Matra MS670 in the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps .

Ickx was also at the start at the ring, but not for Matra, but for BMW . After the sports car activities at Ferrari ended at the end of 1973, he had not signed an annual contract, but instead drove for different teams in sports car races. Since the race at the Nürburgring was also a race of the German racing championship, both BMW and Ford Deutschland registered silhouette touring cars. The cars were prominently occupied. Ickx's partner at BMW was Hans-Joachim Stuck . At Ford, in addition to the two works drivers Dieter Glemser and Toine Hezemans , the two Formula 1 drivers Niki Lauda and Jochen Mass were at the start. Lauda's commitment showed the difference between motorsport contracts in the 1970s and the situation today. Lauda was a works driver at Ferrari in 1974 and had won his first Formula 1 Grand Prix a few weeks before his start at the Nürburgring in Spain . In the Eifel he started for Ford Germany, a 100% subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company . At that time Ferrari was already majority owned by Fiat . Such a process would be impossible today. The Ferrari factory driver Felipe Massa could hardly have started for Audi in the 2012 6-hour race in São Paulo .

After a fourth place in the Monza and a second overall place in Spa, the British Gulf Research team came to the Nürburgring as the leader in the brand world championship.

The race

In qualification training, Gérard Larrousse achieved the best training time in the Matra MS 670. The time of 7.10.800 minutes corresponded to an average of 190.822 km / h. In the race, the Jarier / Beltoise -Matra set the pace from the start. At Alfa Romeo, Arturo Merzario again proved to be a stubborn long-distance driver. In the previous year he refused to hand over his cockpit to Carlos Pace . There were similar troubles this year as he kept his teammate Brian Redman waiting two laps for the move. Before that he almost collided with Rolf Stommelen in another Alfa Romeo 33TT12 in a daring overtaking maneuver . Jean-Pierre Jarier and Jean-Pierre Beltoise remained victorious in the overall standings with a one-lap lead over the Alfa Romeo von Stommelen and Carlos Reutemann .
