Alain Serpaggi (born September 19, 1938 in Antananarivo ) is a former French racing driver .

Racing career

Alain Serpaggi was born in Madagascar and grew up in France. He began his career in the 1960s and was one of those drivers of this era who contested monoposto , sports car races and rallies in parallel. He achieved his first successes in 1966 on a Triumph Spitfire , with which he was overall sixth in the Coupes de Vitesse (winner Robert Buchet in a Porsche 906 ) in Montlhéry . In 1968 he made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , where he and Alain LeGuellec drove an Alpine A210 to ninth place in the overall standings. Serpaggi competed five times in the 24-hour race in western France. In 1969 he was a member of the Alpine works team and secured a class win for the Dieppe team . He achieved the best placement in the final ranking in 1974 as eighth with Jacques Laffite in the Ligier JS2 . His last appearance was in 1989 when he made a comeback for the Louis Descartes team after 15 years of absence .

His greatest success in sports car racing was the overall victory in the 1974 European 2-liter sports car championship , which he achieved in an Alpine A441 in front of his colleagues Gérard Larrousse and Jean-Pierre Jabouille . In 1971 Serpaggi took part in the first season of the French Formula Renault championship , which arose from Formula France. He finished second in the championship behind Michel Leclère . He had less success in his appearances in the British and Italian Formula 3 championships .

In the 1980s, Alain Serpaggi was mainly active as a rally driver . In 1985, after seven victories of the season on a Renault 5 Turbo, he became French rally champion in Division 2.
