Louis José Lucien Dolhem (born April 26, 1944 in Paris , † April 16, 1988 in Saint-Étienne ) was a French racing driver and half-brother of Didier Pironi .
Career
José Dolhem began to drive a Lotus Super Seven national race in 1964 . The first attempts remained fragments, the study of technical economics at the Sorbonne in Paris, which he successfully completed in 1969 , had priority .
Dolhem was a textbook example of a 1970s Playboy racing driver. He valued the idea of racing with all its conveniences. Sporting successes remained rare. In 1972 he drove for the Shell Meubles Arnold team with a March 722 the entire season of the Formula 2 European Championship without being able to show any countable results. Only in 1973 did his career get going, which was immediately slowed down by a serious accident. He had a serious accident during the warm-up for the Formula 2 race in Rouen (after finishing third in training) and had to skip the rest of the season.
In 1974 , however, he got a works contract with Team Surtees . He should start again in Formula 2 and in Formula 1 for the team. The contract was made possible by sponsorship from Shell France, which the chronically poorly financed racing team of John Surtees urgently needed. Again there was no success. Dolhem could only qualify for a Grand Prix once. At the US Grand Prix in Watkins Glen , Dolhem started the race from 26th and last place on the grid. On the ninth lap, his Austrian team-mate Helmut Koinigg had a serious accident. When it became known that Koinigg had not survived the accident, the team drew the consequences and Dolhem had to retire on the 25th lap.
In the spring of 1975 he suffered a serious neck injury while skiing, which forced him to take another season off. Surtees terminated the contract and Dolhem did not return to the racing scene until 1976 - again in Formula 2. Despite engagements at Chevron and AGS , the great successes failed to materialize and Dolhem ended his career at the end of the 1979 season.
In April 1988 he died in a plane crash near St. Etienne on the way to an offshore boat race.
