Monza 1000 km race in 1974
The 13th 1000 km race of Monza , also Tropheo Filippo Caracciolo, 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1974 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
With the start of the sports car world championship in 1974 , a new era in sports car racing began . At the end of the 1973 season, Scuderia Ferrari's almost two decades of involvement in this racing series ended. In the winter of 1973/1974, Enzo Ferrari only offered the prospect of further participation in the world championship. The factory drivers Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni test a Ferrari 312PB-74 several times on the company's own test track in Fiorano during the winter months . Despite good results, there were no races. The Scuderia was still fully focused on Formula 1 races .
In contrast to Ferrari , Alfa Romeo increased its activities. For the race in Monza, Autodelta registered three emergency vehicles and one replacement car. Among the six drivers were Arturo Merzario , Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx, three former Ferrari factory drivers. The other pilots were Rolf Stommelen , Carlo Facetti and Andrea de Adamich . Matra brought two new MS670s to Italy. The car with the number 2 was driven by Henri Pescarolo and Gérard Larrousse . In addition to Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the car with the number, Jean-Pierre Jarier joined the team for François Cevert, who died in training for the 1973 US Grand Prix . The Gulf GR7 made its racing debut and was driven by Derek Bell and Mike Hailwood .
The race took place on a track that was partially wet with rain and ended with a triple victory for Alfa Romeo after both Matra had failed due to technical defects. Arturo Merzario and Mario Andretti won with a four-lap lead over their teammates Jacky Ickx and Rolf Stommelen.
Silvio Moser's accident
The race was overshadowed by the accident of the Swiss Silvio Moser . On lap 144, Moser lost control of a 2-liter Lola T294 in the Ascari chicane and crashed at high speed against the March 75S in the run-off zone, which Gabriele Serblin had parked there after a gearbox damage. Moser suffered severe head injuries and was taken to the Ospedale Niguarda Ca 'Granda in Milan in an ambulance , where he was operated on that evening. A few days later the family had him transferred to a clinic in Locarno , where further operations followed. Silvio Moser died 31 days after the race on May 26, 1974 as a result of the accident.
