The noble Jonkheer Gijsbert van Lennep drove his first race in 1958 in a VW . In the course of his career he came to Formula Vee as well as to Formula 3 with DAF and was later one of the fastest drivers in his country in the Porsche Carrera 6 . In 1970 he drove a Porsche 917 for the Finnish Wihuri team. In that year he also won the Porsche Cup as the best private Porsche driver. In 1971 he won together with the Austrian Helmut Marko in the 24-hour race at Le Mans , also in a Porsche 917. Up to 24-hour race in 2010 held Marko van Lennep and there the distance record. They drove 5335.313 km in 24 hours. In 2010 the victorious Audi R15 TDI driven by Mike Rockenfeller , Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas made it 75 kilometers. At the Targa Florio , he took second place. In 1973 he won this race together with Herbert Müller (Switzerland) in a Porsche Carrera RSR.

Apart from the brand world championship, van Lennep started in the Interseries .

Van Lennep made his Formula 1 debut at the Dutch Grand Prix in 1971 for the Stichting Autoraces Nederland team . This race remained his only start in the 1971 season . In 1973 and 1974 he competed a total of four times for the Frank Williams Racing Cars team , which fielded Iso Rivolta racing cars at that time , and three times for Ensign in the 1975 season . His best placings were a sixth place at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1973 and at the Grand Prix of Germany in 1975 , so that he was able to achieve a total of two World Championship points in his Formula 1 career.

In 1972 van Lennep won the European Formula 5000 Championship .

Gijs van Lennep considered his greatest success to be the renewed victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1976, this time together with Jacky Ickx in a Porsche 936 Spyder. In 1974 he was on the podium of the top three for the third time at Le Mans. With his partner Herbert Müller , he drove a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR to second place in the overall ranking. He reached fourth place for a year, again with the Swiss as a partner. 1972 was his blackest race on the Sarthe when his teammate Joakim Bonnier had a fatal accident in the night after a collision. At the end of 1976 he officially resigned from racing.

Gijsbert van Lennep has two brothers who were also automobile athletes, David van Lennep and Hugo van Lennep. Gerard van Lennep, a cousin, was primarily active as a rally driver , but was nevertheless the 1966 and 1967 Dutch national champion as a racing driver in the class up to 850 cc with a Steyr-Puch .
