Brands Hatch 1000km race 1971
The 1971 Brands Hatch 1000 km race , also known as the BOAC 1000 Kilometers World Championship Sports Car Race, Brands Hatch , took place on April 4 at Brands Hatch and was the fourth round of the World Sports Car Championship of that year.
Before the race
The 1971 race at Brands Hatch was the fourth round of the championship. The season began in January with the Buenos Aires 1000 km race at the Autódromo Municipal de Buenos Aires . During the race, Ignazio Giunti had a fatal accident in the Ferrari 312PB after colliding with the Matra MS660 pushed by Jean-Pierre Beltoise . Overall winners were Jo Siffert and Derek Bell in a Porsche 917K .
The two spring races in the United States followed . The 24 Hours of Daytona won Pedro Rodríguez and Jackie Oliver in the Porsche 917 and the 12 Hours of Sebring remained Vic Elford and Gerard Larrousse (also in the Porsche 917) victorious.
The race
John Wyer's team also traveled to the Brands Hatch race with two Porsche 917Ks and the regular crews Jo Siffert / Derek Bell and Pedro Rodríguez / Jackie Oliver. Hans-Dieter Dechent registered two more 917Ks for his Martini Rossi Racing Team. In addition to Gijs van Lennep , Gérard Larrousse and Vic Elford, Brian Redman was also part of the driver team. Redman suddenly resigned at the end of the 1970 season and made a comeback as a driver after only three months as Volkswagen sales manager in South Africa . Ferrari reported a 312PB for Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni and Autodelta two Alfa Romeo T33 / 3-71 for Henri Pescarolo / Andrea de Adamich and Rolf Stommelen / Toine Hezemans .
For Alfa Romeo , the 1000 km race ended with an unexpected success. Since the Italian manufacturer withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of 1951 after Juan Manuel Fangio's victory at the Spanish Grand Prix , there was no notable victory until Brands Hatch. The success was favored by technical problems of the competition. When Henri Pescarolo was the first to be flagged after a driving time of 6: 24: 32.200 hours, he and team-mate de Adamich had a lead of three laps on the Ferrari of Ickx and Regazzoni. Third place went to Siffert and Bell in a Porsche 917K. After a pit stop, Siffert had lost a badly mounted bike and lost seven laps at the next stop. The duo was able to make up one lap by the end of the race. Rolf Stommelen and Toine Hezemans were already one lap ahead of their Alfa Romeo teammates when their T33 / 3-71 rolled out on lap 183 with an engine failure.
