Targa Florio 1971

The 55th Targa Florio , also 55 ° Targa Florio, Piccolo Circuito delle Madonie, Sicilia , in Sicily took place on May 16, 1971 and was the seventh round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
A Targa Florio without a Scuderia Ferrari racing car became a reality for the disappointed Sicilians in 1971. Ferrari had an adequate emergency vehicle with the Ferrari 312PB , but only one car was regularly entered in the world championship . To compete against Porsche and Alfa Romeo with just one car , Enzo Ferrari seemed too risky, so he decided not to report. Nino Vaccarella was the spectators' favorite driver at the start . The teacher, born in Palermo in 1933 , had taken part in the event almost every year since 1958 and was able to win only once despite being often favorites. In 1965 he had remained victorious with Lorenzo Bandini in the factory Ferrari 275P2 . In 1971 he started for Autodelta , the Alfa Romeo racing team. Team partner in the Alfa Romeo T33 / 3 was Toine Hezemans . Autodelta brought four works cars to the Piccolo circuito delle Madonie , three of which took part in the race. In addition to Nino Vaccarella, Toine Hezemans, Andrea de Adamich and Rolf Stommelen , two new drivers joined the team. Gijs van Lennep and Leo Kinnunen were originally supposed to drive a Porsche 908/02 for Hans-Dieter Dechent's Martini Team . However, the car was not ready in time and both drivers were given clearance to start at Alfa Romeo. Gijs van Lennep replaced Henri Pescarolo as a partner of Andrea de Adamich, who did not want to contest the road race. Leo Kinnunen was the substitute for Nanni Galli , who was not yet operational after his accident during training for the 1000 km race in Monza .
The two Porsche teams were supported by staff and material from John Wyer and Hans-Dieter Dechent from the factory team in Zuffenhausen . Three Porsche 908/03 were used, which were developed for the Targa of the previous year from the Porsche 909 Bergspyder . Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodríguez got new teammates for the race. Siffert's partner was an old acquaintance with Brian Redman . Redman had returned to Wyer after his surprising resignation at the end of the 1970 season for the Targa. Rodríguez's teammate was Herbert Müller from Switzerland . Gérard Larrousse and Vic Elford drove the Martini-908/03 .
At Porsche there were already problems during training. Redman had a punctured tire on his first lap of practice and had to wait almost an hour for the tow truck to bring the 908/03 back to the pits. Siffert took over the car and soon had an accident. Elford also had an accident and damaged the front suspension of the Porsche. For the first time, the cars started in the order of their training times. Nino Vaccarella started first in the Alfa Romeo with the number 5. The starting flag was waved by the mother of Ignazio Giunti , who tragically died in the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires . A preliminary decision was made in the first round as three co-favorites were canceled. A few kilometers after the start, Rolf Stommelen came off the track in his Alfa Romeo and had to give up. Brian Redman had an accident in the Porsche in which the car caught fire and burned out completely. Redman suffered burn wounds on his face and neck. Pedro Rodríguez also had an accident on the first lap, so both Wyer-Porsches retired shortly after the start. Alain de Cadenet had an accident on the third lap and was rescued from the burning Lola T210 by a soldier standing at the edge of the track . The worst of the accident ended with Fulvio Tandoi in the Alpine A110 . Near Caltavuturo , the car went off the track and hit a tree on the driver's side. Tandoi was trapped in the vehicle for a long time and died in the helicopter on the flight to a hospital in Palermo .
Vic Elford led the Martini-908/03 up to the seventh lap, then a suspension damage after a collision with a curb put an end to Porsche's winning streak, which had been going on since 1966 . Vaccarella / Hezemans and de Adamich / van Lennep celebrated a double victory for Alfa Romeo. Third place went to Jo Bonnier and Richard Attwood in the Scuderia Filipinetti - Lola T212 .
