Caltavuturo is a city of Metropolitan city of Palermo in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 3768 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Caltavuturo is 80 km southeast of Palermo . The residents mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring communities are Polizzi Generosa , Scillato and Sclafani Bagni .

history

Settlements have been known here since the 9th century. The current place was created in the 17th century and is located south of the old town center.

On January 20, 1893, during the uprising of the Fasci Siciliani , a symbolic land occupation by 500 peasants ended in a massacre when soldiers and carabinieri killed 13 villagers and wounded 21.

Attractions

The parish church was built in the 16th century and changed a lot in the 18th century. Inside there is a statue of the Blessed Virgin. The church of Santa Maria la Nuova contains stucco work from the 18th century. The Konvikt San Francesco has a medieval cloister.
