history

The name Terrasini is probably derived from Latin : from terra sinus = land on the Gulf (the Gulf of Castellammare) or from terra sinorum = land of bays because of the winding coastal landscape in this area with many larger and smaller bays. The name for the area of today's city is first mentioned in a Dotal document from the archive of the monastery of San Martino delle Scale from November 24th, 1350 as terras vocatas li Terrasini as a boundary for the property complex Cinisi.

The caves in the Terrasini area were already inhabited in the late Paleolithic . There are traces of Roman settlers in various parts of the urban area .

The origin of today's place (formerly called Favarotta ) is probably in the late Middle Ages, when farm workers settled here. At that time the area belonged to the large estates of the La Grua Talamanca family from Carini. In the 17th century, fishermen settled on the coast. When the former feudal property was given to the farm workers on long lease , a flourishing agriculture developed around the fishing village.

The day Terrasini was founded as a separate municipality was October 24, 1836. On this day King Ferdinand II issued a decree according to which the village of Favarotta should no longer belong to the municipality of Cinisi, but should form its own municipality under the name Terrasini.
