Petralia Soprana is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily with 3120 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Location and dates

Petralia Soprana is located on a 1147 m high cliff and is the highest municipality in the Monti Madonie . The distance to Palermo in the northwest is 111 km.

The residents mainly work in agriculture and the food industry.

The neighboring communities are Alimena , Blufi , Bompietro , Gangi , Geraci Siculo and Petralia Sottana .

history

Petralia Soprana is of Sican or Greek origin. In the 3rd century BC The place was known under the name Petraea. Under Arab rule , it was considered an impregnable fortress that was inhabited by Arabs and Christians. Under Norman rule , a fort was built below the village, around which today's neighboring municipality of Petralia Sottana developed.

  • The Chiesa San Salvatore , a former mosque with a large dome, was consecrated as a church by Roger I.
  • The Chiesa Santa Maria di Loreto is located on the site of a former Norman fort. The church was built in the 15th century and rebuilt in the Rococo style in the 18th century .
