history

The first Arabs settled here in 747 AD . This is evidenced by a document sent by the Emir el Aadelkum Chbir to the military leader, Ben Muhammad Aausman. At that time still called "Tarbiah", the port was used as a strategic base for Termini Imerese.

In 1154 AD the first dried pasta and spaghetti were made here and exported to all of Sicily and later to the mainland. Chinese monks still come to the town today to get an idea of the noodle production.

On November 14, 1509, King Ferdinand II ascended the land of the Barony of Trabia Castle, claimed the land and the intensive sugar cane cultivation there, and made it independent of Termini Imerese.

In 1635, Don Ottavio II from the Lanza family received the Licentia populandi (a permit to settle) from King Philip IV . He built the first houses. In 1643 he built the first consecrated church of Saint Oliva. In 1652 the "new" Trabia had 143 inhabitants. The production of the mills, the abundance of fish, especially tuna, which favored the growth of the population, developed the village. The descendants of the Lanza family were the most important representatives of politics, the military and the culture of Sicily, most recently Raimondo Lanza di Trabia, u. a. Racing driver and important football official.
