Gangi is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily with 6464 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Location and dates

Gangi is located 125 km southeast of Palermo in the Madonie . The residents mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring communities are Alimena , Blufi , Bompietro , Calascibetta ( EN ), Enna ( EN ), Geraci Siculo , Nicosia ( EN ), Petralia Soprana and Sperlinga ( EN ).

history

The present place was founded in the 14th century. The old village was destroyed in 1299.

On January 1, 1926, Gangi was the scene of a large-scale operation by police and carabinieri under the leadership of Cesare Mori against the brigand gangs and the Cosa Nostra that had set up in Gangi.

Gangi made international headlines in 2017 by attempting to revive the town center, which is threatened by emigration. For 1 euro, vacant houses are sold to those who undertake to renovate these houses within three years.
