Filippo Quattrocchi (born February 13, 1738 in Gangi , † 1813 in Palermo ) was a late Baroque wood sculptor in Sicily .

Life

Quattrocchi was the second-born son of Gandolfo Santo Quattrocchi and Rosalia Nicosia, a sister of the painters and engravers Nicola and Giovanni Nicosia, who painted the ceiling of the church of Santa Maria Catena in Gangi. The Gangi parish's baptismal records indicate that he had a brother Giuseppe Filippo, who was born on October 8, 1734. Due to the second name "Filippo" he was sometimes confused with the brother. The father Gandolfo Quattrocchi is said to have stated on November 10, 1747 that the first-born son Giuseppe was 12 and the second-born son Filippo 9 years old at that time.

He received his basic artistic training in the workshop of his two uncles on his mother's side and through the painter Vito D'Anna . 1761 he moved to Palermo, where he created wooden figures first in the workshop of Vito D'Anna, and later independently by himself in tempera summarized . Most of his numerous works are in Gangi. His eldest son Francesco (1770–1861) continued the workshop after his father's death. The younger son Alberto (1784-1811) was a student of Antonio Canova in Rome .
