history
The place was founded by the Sikels . The Byzantines called the place Ypsigro, the Arabs Ruqqat Basili. From 1316 a fort was built by Francesco I. Ventimiglia . It served as the seat of the counts, from 1595 on as the seat of the Ventimiglia princes. The place developed around the fort and received its current name.
economy
Among the exclusive products of the communities Castelbuono and Pollina belongs Manna , a resin-like product of the ash ( Fraxinus ornus and Fraxinus oxicarpa ), the laxative has properties and can also be used as a sweetener. The Consorzio Obbligatorio Produttori della Manna (Binding Consortium of Manna Producers) guarantees quality and regulates the market. 17 percent of the municipal areas are covered by ash forests. The product was already known to Galen and Dioskurides , but is now only obtained in the Mediterranean area in the Madonie area . The forms of presentation include torroncini alla manna and mannettino , a cake somewhat similar to panettone . In addition to confectionery production, the manufacture of knitwear is one of the most important industries in Castelbuono. Since February 2007, six donkeys have been used to dispose of rubbish instead of the usual four trucks, as they are cheaper and more environmentally friendly, according to Mayor Mario Cicero.
