Giro di Castelbuono

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Giro di Castelbuono (full name Giro Podistico Internazionale Castelbuono ) is the oldest road race in Italy . It has taken place with interruptions since 1912 in Castelbuono on the Annenfest (July 25-27 ). In 2012 the race was postponed to September 16 due to the proximity of the Olympic Games in London . The city run is organized by the Gruppo Atletico Polisportivo Castelbuonese .

Start and finish is in Piazza Margherita. Traditionally, the run is on a 1.12 km long hilly circuit in the city center, which had to be tackled ten times by 2010. Due to the cramped conditions, only invited top athletes can start, and lapped runners will be removed from the race. Since 2011 only nine laps have been run, which shortens the distance to 10 km. From 1995 to 2004 there was also a women's race on a 5.6 km long course.

In the years 1915–19, 1929–30, 1936, 1940–41, 1943–45 and 1958 the event was canceled.
