The Tokyo Marathon ( Japanese 東京 マ ラ ソ ン , Tōkyō Marason ) is a marathon in Tokyo that has usually taken place in February since 2007. The program also includes a 10 km run.
history
The Tokyo Marathon replaced the Tokyo International Men's Marathon , which was held as the men's elite race from 1981 to 2006.
Male elite runners will also be invited to the new event, but the run is also open to hobby runners of both sexes and is now one of the most popular marathons in the world.
After the Tokyo International Women's Marathon was held for the last time in November 2008 , the follow-up event being the Yokohama Marathon , which has been taking place since November 2009, elite runners were invited for the first time in 2009.
In 2020, only around 200 elite athletes were allowed to take part in the run due to the dangers posed by a new coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 . 38,000 runners were originally expected, but amateurs were not allowed in due to concerns about the virus epidemic that had broken out in China .
route
The course, which has been flatter since 2017, begins at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and leads along the Iidabashi to Nihombashi , where the finish line of the 10 km run is located. For the marathon runners , the route leads past Ginza south to Shinagawa via Hibya Park to the end point, the Tokyo station.
