Tomonori Watanabe finished as the winner of the 2005 Hokkaidō Marathon

The Hokkaidō Marathon is a marathon that has been held in Sapporo since 1987 . It is the only marathon in Japan to be held in the summer. It is hosted by a committee of local authorities and media under the direction of the Sapporo Amateur Athletic Association .

Start and finish are in Ōdōri Park . The course first leads south through the Susukino district to Nakajima Park. Over the Sōseikawa-Dōri it then goes past the television tower to the north, where a turning point route on the Shinkawa-Dōri connects. After 25 km you reach the northernmost point at Maeda Park. On the way back, the site of the University of Hokkaidō is crossed and shortly before the destination the former government building of Hokkaidō is passed.

In 2009 the finish line was extended from four to five hours.
