The Hanover Marathon is one of the largest road running events in Germany with international participation. The event has been held annually since 1991, on a Sunday in April since 2014.
organization
From 1991 to 2013, the Hanover Marathon took place on the first Sunday in May every year. In 2014 the event date was swapped with the Hamburg Marathon . Since then, the Hanover Marathon has taken place on a Sunday in April. In 2014 it was April 27th and in 2015, for the 25th anniversary, April 19th.
In 2014, the Hanover Marathon received the Road Race Silver Label from the IAAF World Athletics Association. The event is organized by the event agency Eichels Event GmbH . The sporting organizer is the Lower Saxony Athletics Association .
In 2015, over 20,000 participants in all disciplines took part in the 25th Hanover Marathon.
In addition to the marathon , a half marathon , a 10 km run and a half marathon are offered for both inline skaters and hand bikers . On the Saturday before the competition, the children's run has become the crowd's favorite; the registration capacity has already been reached days in advance. The routes are flat and fast.
In 2016, the Kenyan Edinah Jerotich Kwambai was disqualified after the race for doping and Anna Hahner , who had previously placed second, was subsequently declared the winner in August.
The 30th Hanover Marathon in 2020, which was scheduled for April 26, was canceled on March 23, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The anniversary event is scheduled to take place on April 18, 2021.
route
The 10 km route initially leads along the west bank of the Maschsee before it joins the marathon and half marathon route at the height of the south bank in the direction of Hildesheimer Straße .
The 2012 marathon was held on a modified circuit. The start and finish of all runs, as in previous years, was the New Town Hall on Friedrichswall . The course led south along the Maschsee to Döhren . Back over the Südstadt , the Aegidientorplatz and past the main train station , the course reached the Oststadt . There the marathon route branches off from that of the half marathon into the List and Vahrenwald , and then flows back to the half marathon route shortly before Nordstadt before it goes over the Leibnizufer to the finish on the Friedrichswall. At the center of the criticism of the old route was that the marathon runners were led through the Georgengarten and ran away from the finish point, which was obviously a psychological sticking point.
The organizers had announced another route change for 2013. The marathon then passed the Eilenriede and the rebuilt Herrenhausen Palace .
There were also some minor changes in 2014. The old town loop, which is unpopular with marathon runners , has been deleted; instead, the kilometers were shifted to the northern part of the city. The construction work on the Trammplatz for the marathon was also interrupted and the start / finish area was enlarged to ensure better supplies for the finishers.
