The Pyongyang Marathon ( Korean : Man'gyŏngdae sanggukche marason kyŏnggidaehoe 만경 대상 국제 마라 손 경기 대회; English officially: Mangyongdae Prize International Marathon ) is a marathon in Pyongyang that was first held in 1981. According to the organizers, the 22nd edition took place in 2009, as usual as part of the Mangyongdae Sports Festival and other Sun Day celebrations , the birthday of the "eternal President" of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea , Kim Il-sung .
The run was reopened to foreign runners in 2000, after athletes from the Eastern Bloc last took part in 1987 . The German Ulrich Steidl was eighth in 2000 in 2:13:56 h.
In 2001 the event was coordinated by the Swiss company International Sport and Leisure (ISL) and sponsored by Fila , Heineken , the Swiss data processing company Datactivity and the Financial Times , which was interpreted as a sign of a cautious opening of North Korea. About 500 local and 50 foreign runners took part this year.
In 2007 Swiss Athletics received the invitation for two athletes. Roger Antoine, Christoph Hubacher, Fabiola Rueda-Oppliger and Jenny Breitschmid represented Switzerland this year, when for the first time there were two South Koreans in the starting field.
The start and finish is the Kim Il Sung Stadium . The route leads to the Arc de Triomphe , passes the Hyoksin, the Yongung, the Chollima , the Rakwon and the Kwangbok streets and turns on the highway of the youth heroes .
Since 2014, amateurs traveling to North Korea as foreign tourists can also take part in the marathon, provided they register in advance. In 2018 the marathon took place on April 8th. Foreign visitors could take part in the run as tourists, but first had to book a trip with one of the few travel agencies that North Korea has in its program.
