Fila is a sporting goods manufacturer. The company was founded in Italy in 1911 and has been managed from South Korea since 2007 after a takeover .

history

Fila was founded in 1911 by the Fila brothers in Coggiola , Piedmont . Originally it made clothes for the people of the Italian Alps. The company's main product was underwear before Enrico Frachey, who was hired as managing director in 1974, began producing sportswear. The sportswear first became known through the tennis player Björn Borg , later also through the mountaineer Reinhold Messner and the skiers Alberto Tomba and Ingemar Stenmark .

In 1988 the Italian holding company Gemina took over majority control of the then Italian family company Fila. In 1993 she founded Fila Holding SpA and listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange . After Gemina was split into two companies in 1997, the stake in Fila was transferred to the Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali (HdP) , which was founded at the time, and is now RCS MediaGroup . This pursued the idea of building up an Italian luxury fashion group in addition to a media group and in 1998 also took over the Valentino brand . However, the project failed and forced HdP to give up the fashion division in 2001.

The sale of Fila proved particularly difficult. It was not until 2003 that the RCS MediaGroup , which had meanwhile been restructured into a pure media group , was able to sell the operational business of Fila Holding to Luxembourg-based Sport Brands International , a subsidiary of the US investment company Cerberus , and take the holding's shares off the stock exchange.

In 2004 a management buy-out took place at the South Korean subsidiary of Fila , which was founded in 1991 , whereby Fila Korea separated from the Fila Group and was integrated into GLBH Holdings . Both are directed by Yoon-Soo (Gene) Yoon.

In 2007, GLBH Holdings bought the majority of shares in Fila Luxembourg, the owner of the trademark rights to Fila, from Sport Brands International (SBI). As a result, the part of Fila that remained with SBI was again restructured and fragmented. In March 2008, the activities in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India were sold to Barclays Bank and the Indian Batra Group , which they ran under the name Integrix .

In September 2010 the shares of Fila Korea were listed on the stock exchange there. After that, with the takeover of a 75% stake in Integrix, the Western European business was again managed directly from Korea, while in Russia and Latin America the brand remained licensed to large sporting goods retailers.
