The Chollima Street is a main thoroughfare in the North Korean capital Pyongyang . It bears its name after the mythological creature Ch'ŏllima and leads from the Chungsong Bridge through the P'yŏngch'ŏn-guyŏk district and on to the inner city district of Chung-guyŏk to the Pothong Gate . It thus forms an important transport link between the eastern and western parts of the city, which are separated from one another by the Taedong Gang, and the Pyongyang-Kaesŏng expressway, which leads south out of the city .

The road was laid out in 1953 and further expanded in the 1970s. It forms the boundary between several administrative areas. It separates the districts of Potongmun-dong, Puksŏng-dong, Pongji-dong, Ryukkyo-dong, Saemaul-dong and Haeun-dong in the east from the districts of Changgwang-dong, Sochang-dong, Pongnam-dong, Ryukkyo-dong, P ' yŏngch'ŏn-dong and Haeun-dong in the west. It also goes through the district of Tongsong-dong.

Adjacent buildings and facilities

The development on Chollima Street consists primarily of eight-story apartment blocks. Ten, twelve, 15 and 25-storey residential towers are lined up next to them. The residential towers completed in 1971 in particular have visual similarities with the European post-war architecture of the 1950s.

In addition to the 326 cable plant and various public facilities such as the Chongnyu Restaurant and the Changgwangsan Hotel, there are significant cultural and sports facilities along the road. Also adjacent is the area where the test shots of the first machine gun produced in North Korea were fired. The place can now be visited as a memorial under the name Phyongchon Revolution Site.

The road ends at a roundabout where the Pothong Gate , western city gate of the Pyongyang Medieval Fortress and North Korean National Treasure # 3 is located. At the other end, it continues as the Pyongyang-Kaesong expressway .

Pyongyang ice rink

The ice rink on Chollima Street

The ice rink was built in the early 1980s on a piece of land between Chollima Street and the banks of the Pothong in the Potongmu-dong district. It has 6,000 seats over four tiers, making it the largest ice rink in North Korea. Your ice surface has a size of 30 × 60 meters.

In March 2007, the ice hockey world championship for women in Division II was held in the hall .

Hallenstadion

Also in Potongmu-dong, between Pothong-gang-embankment and Chollima-street, is the indoor stadium between the ice rink and the people's palace of culture. The building is 145 meters long and 138 meters wide. It is closed off by a flat roof that slopes down by eight meters. Four tiers inside the building offer space for a total of around 20,000 visitors.

The stadium is the location for various cultural and political events and, above all, for sporting activities such as table tennis, volleyball, basketball or tennis. An adjacent fountain park with white sculpture groups is visible from the street. The forecourt of the stadium was used as a public mourning place after the death of Kim Jong-il .

Palace of Culture of the People

The Folk Culture Palace was built in 1974. It influences the street scene through its three buildings built in the traditional Korean style and connected to one another with a total of 21 curved tile roofs. Chongnyu restaurant

The large specialty restaurant for Korean cuisine is, to be precise, off the street, directly on the banks of the Pothong-gang. The unusual building with its elaborate interior was built in 1981 and renovated in 2008. Its architectural style is characterized by the maritime appearance in the form of a cruise ship. Over four floors, it offers space for over a thousand guests on a gross floor area of 10,000 square meters.
