Chung-guyŏk ( German inner city district) is one of the 18 districts of Pyongyang , the capital of North Korea . The district is located in the center of the city between Pot'ong-gang and Taedong-gang, and is bordered by Moranbong-guyk district to the north, Pot'onggang-guyŏk to the northwest, and P'yŏngch'ŏn-guyŏk to the south . The islands of Rungna and Yanggak in Taedong-gang are also part of Chung-guyŏk.

Economy and Transport

The district is considered the center of the North Korean economy. The Chollima Street leads as a main thoroughfare of East Pyongyang over the district P'yŏngch'ŏn-guyŏk by Chung-guyok. Within the district, Sungri Street is one of the most important north-south connections and at the same time a representative main traffic route.

A high density of companies is particularly concentrated around Changgwang Street . The Chŏllima Line of the Pyongyang Metro runs within Chung-guyŏk and stops there at Yŏnggwang , Ponghwa and Sŭngni . The main train station is located on Sosong Street . Air Koryo operates an office in the Tongsŏng-dong administrative unit.

The district is connected to the district south of Taedong-gang by five road bridges, the Yanggak Bridge , the Taedong Bridge , the Okryu Bridge , the Rungna Bridge and the Chongnyu Bridge .

Chung-guyŏk is home to several ministries and agencies of the North Korean government, as well as the headquarters of the Labor Party of Korea . On the bank of Taedong-gang lies Kim-Il-sung Square with the Great People's Study Hall , the Foreign Ministry , the headquarters of the Labor Party of Korea and the History Museum , as well as the Cabinet Secretariat , the Ministry of Foreign Trade and the Korean Art Gallery .

Chung-guyŏk was once the historic city center of Pyongyang, but was completely destroyed by American bombing in the Korean War. Today there are only a few remnants of the pre-war period. Other important buildings and facilities include the Museum of the party's founding , the Koryo Hot'el , the Taedonggang Hotel and Yonggwang Hot'el that Pyongyang First Department, the Stamp Museum of Korea and the Taedongmun cinema .

The May Day Stadium is located on the island of Rungna , and with a capacity of 150,000 it is the largest stadium in the world. In the district of Mansu-dong, on the Mansu Hill, there is the large Mansudae monument in honor of the revolutionary struggle of the North Korean people under Kim Il-sung, and directly behind it the Korean Revolution Museum . Other attractions include the Mansudae Fountain Park with various fountains and stone sculptures. The Pyongyang Railway Museum is located opposite the main train station .

Kim Ch'aek Technical University is located on the banks of Taedong-gang on Otan Kangan Street .

The Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has its headquarters here.

Natural monuments

The mountain cherry trees and Manchurian fir trees on Rungna Island are listed under the natural monuments of North Korea with the sort number 1.
