The Pyongyang Bell (평양 종) is a landmark of the North Korean capital Pyongyang and is listed as National Treasure No. 23 .

history

The bell was made in a temple between June and September 1726 during the Ri Dynasty ; it replaced a bell that was destroyed by fire in 1714. It rang every day at 4 a.m. and 10 p.m., as well as on national holidays and as a warning of impending natural disasters . Since 1925 it has been on the one street at what was then the east gate of the city.

Today the bell hangs in a pavilion in Chung-guyŏk (Dong Taedongmun-dong ) on Taedongmun-Kangan Street .

Technical details

The bell weighs around 13 tons and is said to be made of 35 metals. It measures 3.1 m in height and 1.6 m in diameter. The wall thickness is 30 cm.
