Tongdaewŏn-guyŏk is one of the 18 boroughs of Pyongyang , the capital of North Korea . The district is located on the eastern bank of the Taedong-gang and is bordered by the Taedonggang-guyŏk district to the north and Sŏngyo-guyŏk to the south . To the east of the district is Sadong-guyŏk . Tongdaewon was established as the Pyongyang Municipality in October 1960. Before that, the area belonged to the neighboring towns of Sŏngyo and Taedonggang.

The Taedong Bridge and Okryu Bridge connect the district with the downtown district of Chung-guyk on the other side of the river .

Buildings and facilities

The Chuch'e Tower

The monument of the Chuch'e ideology with the Chuch'e Tower as a symbol of Pyongyang has been located in Tongdaewon since 1982 .

In the district of Ryul is the so-called "barn", the prison in which the crew of the USS Pueblo (AGER-2) were held for six weeks between January and March 1968. The East Pyongyang Stadium is in the immediate vicinity.

The Munsubong Revolution Site is a wooded area on an elevation in the east of the district, where Kim Il-sung had trees planted in April 1947 to re-green the area destroyed in World War II. In the north of the site is the Munsu summit memorial, which is intended to commemorate the reforestation by the then ruler.

The Korean documentary film studio in the Tonsing district is right next to the Chuch'e Tower. It reports to the Department of Propaganda and Agitation of the Central Committee of the Party of Labor of Korea and is usually responsible for political documentation.

The International Red Cross operates a hospital for foreign visitors in Taesin, which is independently managed by the North Korean government.

There are several research and educational institutions in the district.

The Kim Il-sung Higher Party School in Tongdaewon was founded on June 1, 1946 by Kim Il-sung as one of the first government institutions. Candidates for leadership positions in government, political parties or the military are trained there.

The Kim Hyŏng-jik University of Education is named after Kim Il-sung's father and has been accepting foreign students since 1975. Twelve faculties, including philosophy, history, foreign languages ​​and literature, are located on an area of ​​104,000 square meters.

The Pyongyang University of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts in Raengchon-dong was founded in 1953. It has five faculties and specializes in acting and film and television production, among other things. In the same district is the Pyongyang University of Physical Education; a college for sports education . It has existed since September 1958 and mainly trains children and youth trainers for various sports.

The Kim Il-sung Institute of Politics is also located in the Munsin-dong district.

Natural monuments

The Dahurian larches of Munsubong in the district of Raengch'ŏn-dong are listed under the natural monuments of North Korea with the sorting number 8.

Administrative division

Taesŏng-guyŏk is divided into ten administrative units, the dongs . The districts Munsin-dong, Dongdaewon-dong, Raengchon-dong and Samma-dong are in turn divided into two, the districts Sinhung-dong and Tongsin-dong into three administrative units.
