Rakrang-guyŏk is one of the 18 boroughs of Pyongyang , the capital of North Korea . It borders in the north on the opposite bank of the Taedong-gang with the districts Mangyŏngdae-guyŏk and the inner city district Chung-guyŏk , in the east with Ryŏkp'o-guyŏk , in the south with the districts Chunghwa and Kangnam , and west of the Taedong-gang with the Chollima County .
The island of Turu-do in Taedong-gang also belongs to the district of Rakrang-guyŏk .
history
While Korea was under Japanese rule , the region was part of Daidō-gun County . Several parts of Pyongyang were later attached to it. In 1959, Rakrang-guyŏk became an independent district. Today, unlike most other regions in North Korea, the district is also open to tourists.
Buildings and facilities
In Rakrang there are several tombs from the Goguryeo period, most of which were discovered by Japanese archaeologists in the 1910s .
As an expressway, the Tongil Road is a main route from Pyongyang to Kaesŏng and on to Panmunjeom to the demilitarized zone. Following this, the 25 April Film Studios has been located out of town, directly after the Kwanmun district, since 1961 . The focus of the production there are war films. North of Tongil Street is the Tongil market and the headquarters of Hana Electronics .
The road then passes under the Reunification Memorial and past the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology , the first privately funded educational institution in North Korea that opened in September 2010.
The Palace of Science and Technology is currently being built on the island of Ssuk-sŏm .

Rakrang-guyŏk is divided into 18 administrative units, including nine dong and nine ri. The five large dong Chongbaek, Chongo, Kwanmun, Nakrang and Tongil are in turn divided into two each, and Chungsong-dong into three administrative units.
