The Taedongmun Cinema ( Korean 대 동문 영화관 , Taedongmun-Yeonghwagwan , "Taedong Gate Cinema") is a movie theater in Pyongyang , North Korea's capital . It was built in 1955 and given its intended purpose. It was named after the nearby Taedong Gate . The building is designed in neoclassicism . It is located in a 2,650 m² area in the city center and extends over three floors . In addition to film screenings, various other events such as exhibitions or the Pyongyang International Film Festival take place here. In a shop you can buy literature related to film . In 2008 the cinema was renovated: while the facade was retained, the interior design was completely redesigned. Depending on the source, there are different information about capacity, two halls with 500 seats each or a total of 1,400 seats.

The first German Film Week took place in North Korea from November 4 to 8, 2013 , and four German productions were shown: The miracle of Bern , Goethe! , Almanya - Welcome to Germany and the big dream .

It is located on Sungri Street in the central Chung-guyŏk District , Taedongmun-dong (Dong) District . Opposite is the Pyongyang student palace .
