Paula A. Cox CBE (* 1964 ) is a Bermudian politician of the Progressive Labor Party (PLP) who was Prime Minister between 2010 and 2012 .

Life

Following the Progressive Labor Party's victory in the House of Assembly elections on November 10, 1998, Paula Cox was appointed Minister of Labor, Home Affairs and Public Security by Prime Minister Jennifer M. Smith . After a restructuring of the government, she took over the post of education minister from 2002 to 2004 and also acted as minister for development between 2002 and 2003. Despite the PLP's victory in the July 24, 2003 election, Jennifer Smith was replaced five days after the July 29, 2003 election as Prime Minister and Chairwoman of the PLP by the previous Minister for Public Works and Engineering, Alex Scott . At this party meeting she was named as a possible successor to Smith, but renounced this office.

Prime Minister Scott then appointed Paula Cox as attorney general and attorney general in his cabinet in 2003. At the same time, she briefly took over the office of Minister for Youth, Sport, Leisure and Culture in 2003. After her father Eugene Cox passed away in January 2004, she took over the post of Minister for Finance and Economic Development from him and held this position for almost nine years until December 2012.

After Ewart Brown took office as Scott's successor in the functions of Prime Minister and Chairman of the PLP on October 30, 2006, Paula Cox was confirmed by him as Minister of Finance and Economic Development. At the same time, she took over the functions of Vice Prime Minister between 2006 and 2010 and as such was acting Prime Minister several times in Brown's absences. She was also Vice-Chair of the PLP between 2006 and 2010.

On October 29, 2010 Paula Cox finally succeeded Ewart Brown as Prime Minister and Chairwoman of the PLP. At the same time, she continued to take over the office of Minister for Finance and Economic Development in her cabinet. In the elections on December 17, 2012, however, she suffered a major defeat with her PLP. The One Bermuda Alliance emerged from these elections , which was formed from a merger of the United Bermuda Party and the Bermuda Democratic Alliance in 2011. This alliance won 15,949 votes (51.68 percent) and was able to improve its result by five seats to 19 seats. The Progressive Labor Party only got 14,218 votes (46.07 percent) and lost five seats, so that it only had 17 seats in the House of Assembly. Paula Cox herself lost her seat in the constituency of Devonshire North , leaving Parliament for 16 years. The new Prime Minister was Craig Cannonier of the One Bermuda Alliance.

In 2014 Paula Cox was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
