The route is a circular course of 21.097 km, which partly runs through the historical center of Salzburg and is run through once by the half marathon runners and twice by the marathoners. It started at different locations in the old town over the years. Starting at Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz (since 2019), it goes over Rudolfskai into Nonntal and further along Hellbrunner Allee to the south of the city, past Hellbrunn Palace , on via Morzg and Leopoldskron Palace , Riedenburg and Mülln to the Lehener Bridge , from there past Mirabell Palace and over the Staatsbrücke back to the old town, where the runners cross the finish line in front of the Great Festival Hall. The route is flat, largely paved and has a maximum difference in altitude of ten meters. The unpaved section in Hellbrunner Allee consists of a smooth, paved path that is rolled before the marathon.

The Salzburg Marathon has been Austria's first organically certified sporting event since 2010 and has received this award ten times in a row since then. In 2017, five dishes were prepared in Salzburg's “Bio-Dorf” using seasonally available ingredients as well as regional and organic ingredients, each representing a specialty from each of Salzburg's five districts.

The Austrian Marathon Championships have been held five times so far as part of the Salzburg Marathon . The titles went to Markus Hohenwarter as third overall in the men in 2:24:41 h and Eva-Maria Gradwohl as overall winner in the women, in 2009 the champions were identical to the overall winners with Christian Pflügl and Ursula Bredlinger . In 2012, Karl Aumayr won the title as fifth overall among the men in 2:23:25 h and Karin Freitag as third overall among the women in 2:47:14 h. In 2014, overall winner Edwin Kemboi in the men’s race in 2:22:00 hours and again Karin Freitag, second overall in the women’s race in 2:49:45 hours, were the fastest Austrians. In 2016, Robert Gruber, third overall, and Anita Baierl, second overall, won the national championship titles on their marathon debut.

In 2018, the Austrian State Marathon Championships took place as part of the Salzburg Marathon. The titles were secured by Karin Freitag (fifth marathon title) and Isaac Kosgei .
