Barcelona marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Barcelona Marathon ( Catalan Marató de Barcelona ) is a marathon in Barcelona that has been held in March since 1978.

route

The route is a circular route with start and finish on Plaça d'Espanya below Montjuïc . First it goes north to Camp Nou , the stadium of FC Barcelona . Shortly afterwards you turn for the first time for a short distance onto Avinguda Diagonal , on which you walk towards the city center, before going back to the vicinity of the starting area. This is where the 10 km run started at the same time ends, while the marathon runners turn onto the Gran Via de Los Corts and now cross the Eixample . After three kilometers, turn left into Passeig de Gràcia , past Casa Batlló and Casa Milà , both built by Antoni Gaudí .

After a further stretch on Avinguda Diagonal, we go to two more modernist buildings , first north to the Hospital de Santa Creu i Sant Pau by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and from there via Avinguda Gaudí to the Sagrada Família , which, like the Hospital de Sant Pau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Shortly after the half marathon mark, the Torre Agbar is reached and, after another loop through the eastern part of the Eixample and on the Avinguda Diagonal, at km 30 the building of the Forum of Cultures from 2004. From there it goes west towards the city center the Estació de França and the zoo in the Parc de la Ciutadella , then through the Arc de Triomf and onto the Plaça de Catalunya .

Now it goes through the Barri Gòtic to the cathedral on the Plaça de la Seu and across the Plaça Sant Jaume with the Palau de la Generalitat and the Casa de la Ciutat on the southern part of the Rambla , over which you walk to the Columbus Column. From there it goes over a loop through the district of Sant Antoni to the destination on Plaça de Espanya.

history

Originally called the Marató de Catalunya , the event took place in Palafrugell for the first two years .

For a long time the course was a point-to-point course with start in Mataró and finish in Barcelona. A similar route was run in the 1992 Summer Olympics marathon . As with this one, the goal in the following years was the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Montjuïc, but then the decision was made to spare the runners this last climb.

In 2001 the marathon was completely relocated to downtown Barcelona. Due to disagreements with the city administration, the event was canceled in 2005 and instead a Marató del Mediterrani was held in the surrounding area . In 2006 the city of Barcelona was involved in the organization and the marathon was brought back to the city center.
