The Barcelona Zoo ( Catalan : "Parc Zoològic de Barcelona", Spanish : "Parque Zoológico de Barcelona") is a zoo with around 7500 animals from 502 species. It is located on an area of ​​around 13 hectares in the south-eastern part of the Parc de la Ciutadella , which was previously used for the 1888 World Exhibition in Barcelona . The zoo opened in September 1892.

Areas

The animals in the zoo in Barcelona are housed in the Aquarama , Komodos , Titi Monkey Gallery , Small Primates Gallery , Gorilla Enclosure , Palmeral , Aviary , Reptile House , the farm and other enclosures areas.

The Aquarama is a dolphinarium in which, in addition to four bottlenose dolphins , terrariums with frogs, toads and other amphibians can be seen. The Komodos is home to Komodo dragons , muntjaks , rice finches , collar pigeons and two-colored fruit pigeons .

Floquet de New in 2003

In the Titi Monkey Gallery are Goeldi's marmoset , white capuchin , pygmy marmoset , golden-headed lion tamarin , Kaiserschnurrbarttamarine , red-handed tamarin and tamarins to see. The Small Primates Gallery displays Brazzame cats , small white-nosed monkeys , great white-nosed monkeys , pygmy monkeys , barbary macaques , siamangs, and collared monkeys .

A group of seven gorillas now live in the gorilla enclosure . This is also the home of the zoo's most famous animal, the world's only known albino gorilla Floquet de Neu (Catalan for "snowflake"; in Spanish "Copito de Nieve"). Floquet de Neu arrived in Barcelona on November 1, 1966 and lived at the Barcelona Zoo for 37 years. In 2001 he was diagnosed with skin cancer that could not be cured and in 2003 he was put to sleep. It was so popular that it is still the symbol of the zoo today.
