The Edinburgh Marathon is a marathon in Edinburgh that has been held since 2003 in late May and early June. It is the largest in Scotland and the second largest in the United Kingdom after the London Marathon .
The complicated participation procedure includes a number lottery, there are also, with different registration dates, guaranteed starting places for previous participants in the event, for donors to one of the charitable projects supported by the Edinburgh Marathon, for members of Scottish running clubs, for runners who have a qualification standard graded according to age and for foreign starters who book through a licensed tour operator.
In addition to the individual competition, there is a marathon relay for teams of four.
The route introduced in 2007 is a point-to-point course with a net gradient of approx. 70 meters in altitude . The start is in London and Regent Road. From there it goes through Holyrood Park past Arthur's Seat down to Portobello , where the Firth of Forth is reached after four miles . Follow the bank in an easterly direction via Musselburgh , Prestonpans and Cockenzie and Port Seton to Longniddry , turn around at Gosford House and walk the last nine miles in the opposite direction to the finish at the Musselburgh racecourse.
